Red River County residents view a hand-drawn map of the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir at Cuthand United Methodist Church. Twenty-three new large reservoirs are expected to be built in Texas over the next five decades, according to the Texas Water Development Board. Commission president Cindy Elias said at a public listening session last week that the minor infractions listed in the draft policy are rarely enforced, according to the police officers that she has spoken with. Daunte Wright was pulled over in 2021 in Minnesota for expired registration tags and hanging an air freshener from his rearview mirror.
“Surface water is one of, if not the most, susceptible supplies to climate change,” said Robert Mace, the executive director and chief water policy officer for the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University. The water level dropped drastically at Falcon Dam by August, when the reservoir dropped to less than 10% of its capacity. Climate change has brought higher temperatures that enhance the effects of droughts. This summer, as Texas baked — the hottest July on record fueled its worst drought in a decade — water levels in reservoirs across the state fell dramatically, prompting hundreds of mandatory water restrictions.
If deer head into the rut in poor condition, then they will come out of rut in even worse shape, he said. The change means all licenses will be valid for one year regardless of the date when they are bought. The study also included Mesquite, Texas as a destination fishing hobbyists need to check out, citing the city’s Texas Fly Fishing and Brew Festival as a must-see event that brings together experts, enthusiasts and especially eaters. In other categories, the Lone Star State ranked fourth for its number of fishing charters and guides.
Two counties to the east, plans to dam the Sulphur River and flood thousands of acres for the benefit of growing North Texas cities have alarmed local residents whose homes and land could be swallowed by a new reservoir. “Until this state gets serious and has a sense of urgency, we will be woefully deficient in the future,” state Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, said during an interim Senate committee hearing on water this year. “Pockets of this state don’t have until 2070,” he said, referring to the time span of the state’s water plan.
Texas was included near the top mainly due to its passionate fishing community, the study said. Texas also has the largest number of fishing contests, derbies and tournaments in the whole country. The file photo above shows a man fishing at a lake. Texas was just ranked one of the best states in the country to go fishing in this year.
Water lightly stained; 75 degrees; 2.53 feet low. Cold front and winds has slowed the bite, but fishing should improve by the weekend. Bass are good on shallow points and pockets on spinner baits and Ned rigs, Carolina rigs and crankbaits. Crappie are good on the edge of the river on jigs and 155 bridge around trees near the river biting jigs. White bass and hybrids are good up trolling with deep diving crankbaits.
The reservoir’s water level has dropped over the past decade, hurting the local tourism industry. Now, after four public working group sessions , the Police Commissioners will process the feedback they received over the past three months. The Human Rights Commission, meanwhile, is continuing its community listening sessions to get feedback from the public and impacted communities on the policy.
Some of the catfish had moved up into shallower water and can be caught using fresh cut shad. Bass are schooling and chasing shad in the main lake. Chain pickerel should be getting more active with the cooler water. Bream have moved off the beds and are in deeper water. The lake has a lot of milfoils and hydrilla in the coves and water’s edge holding some smaller bream. The top water bite should be picking up with the water cooling.
Williamson is retiring at the end of the year, and a majority of his fellow county commissioners passed a resolution opposing the reservoir in December. At the Texas Democratic Party State Convention in Dallas this summer, Hunter Evans, a young Red River County resident, convinced Democrats to approve a similar resolution. Hickory, pecan and walnut trees dot the Sulphur River Basin a little more than 30 miles south of the Oklahoma state line. South of Clarksville, FM 910 cuts through tree farms and cattle ranches to Cuthand United Methodist, where around two dozen residents gathered in late July to discuss the planned Marvin Nichols Reservoir.
