“It fell together perfectly, she picked up on stuff quickly, and she’s absolutely amazing,” Manginelli said. Eager to form a band with like-minded musicians since high school, Slinky’s members had to wait until college to find their groove. “There aren’t too many people who are still into being in rock bands in our areas,” said Lucas Bohr, 16, a junior at Islip High School. The Burgundy Canal is a cultural masterpiece, yet car-bound visitors might not even know it exists.
There is a deep comfort in stress-free games like these that always calls to me. The modern minimalist tasting room at Big Cork, a half-hour drive west of Frederick, is buzzy and fun. White walls meet a painted black ceiling, under-counter angular white leather couches offset molded acrylic chairs, and stools crafted to look like big corks pull it all together. Outside, the views of distant mountains are six layers deep in some directions.
“I had to be my own band and just play along to songs, which helped me in a way,” he said. Before the band starts playing, Luca Ferrandino, 15, a sophomore at Bay Shore Senior High School, puts earplugs in as he stands in front of LaRosa’s kit. Ferrandino plays bass and is lead vocalist; Bohr plays guitar and sings occasionally; Liam Armstrong, 14, a freshman at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, also plays guitar. Mike Fincken, who founded New World Music Center in Baldwin in 1988, has observed a shift in how kids consume and make music. Whereas waves of kids started their own bands when Fincken, now 60, was growing up in Freeport, he said the availability of prerecorded music, electronic instruments and online music sharing changed that. The canal was built to connect the River Yonne and the River Saône, to transport local products from Dijon to Paris.
Bear wires are available to hang food at many backcountry campsites, but for those without—including in the Enchanted Valley, High Divide Royal Basin, and the entire Wilderness Coast—you must have a Park Service–approved bear canister. Consult the Park Service’s Olympic Wilderness Trip Planner map to know what’s required where you want to camp. More recently, in 2018, in a quirky case, the National Park Service teamed up with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and U.S. Forest Service to begin relocating mountain goats via helicopter from Olympic National Park to the North Cascades, over 100 miles away. Mountain goats aren’t native to Olympic and a dozen were introduced here by a sporting club in the 1920s.
In the north, Newport State Park offers access to beaches and forest trails over 11 miles of shoreline. Paved paths from the parking lots near the entrance easily reach the beach at Newport Bay, where Lake Michigan audibly laps the shore, making for a pleasant experience even for the visually impaired. Ninety-five percent of the park is federally designated wilderness, in which motorized traffic is prohibited.
While teen — and slightly older — groups are not common acts in his weeknight and weekend events, the rare ones, like N’Theory and Social Cyanide, wound up on his radar through good word-of-mouth and video performances. I’m always startled by the sense of wonder I feel when I visit America’s national parks. When you make it to Forks, stop by the Westend Taproom Tip and Sip to sample local craft beers and ciders and chat with residents. Farther south along the coast, the Creekside Restaurant at Kalaloch Lodge sources most of its food and beverages locally, with 100 percent of its wine offerings from Washington State. (The restaurant also serves a Tree of Life martini, using Washington-made vodka.) Top seafood picks include the Dungeness crab mac and Beecher’s cheese, classic ale-battered fish and chips, or a sourdough bread bowl full of clam chowder with bacon. Just north of the park, the 135-mile, Olympic Discovery Trail runs from the Victorian seaport of Port Townsend all the way to La Push on the Pacific coast.
