Hooked on salmon: Fall chinook snagging draws anglers to Fort Peck Reservoir

For occasional use, you can get great performance out of a less expensive model. More recently, many anglers have discovered the gravel beds installed by FWC biologists have become hot spots, and one particularly good area is right off the Ann Olesky Park Pier. The pier is lighted and comfortable, so fishing there has become popular at night, when specks often feed best. Relatively more spectacular have been catches from the Ann Olesky Park Pier, at 6100 Lake Trafford Road. Arthur “Junebug” Coleman and a friend caught 40 off the pier Monday night.

Those are my criteria for deciding how and where I spend my time on the water. With that philosophy in mind, I’ve listed—and ranked in descending order—the 10 freshwater fish I consider the most underrated. Roll your eyes if you must, but if you don’t have a good time cranking on any one of these species, you might need to check your pulse. Any spinning reel can catch fish, but having the right one makes the experience much more fun. To use a line spooler, ensure it is securely attached to the base to produce enough tension to pack the reel with line.

how to line a fishing pole with a spinning reel

Attach a spinning or baitcasting reel to the base and load a spool of line onto the thimble. The bobbin will hold small to medium-sized spools of line and apply pressure to the spool while winding. The table-top station provides a solid base to apply pressure to the line.

The size rating might also appear as “6/140” or “6 lbs./140 yards,” with the second number representing the maximum line length a reel can accept. Filling your reel with a fresh fishing line spooler is the best way to land the fish of a lifetime. The heavy-duty, full-size PENN Fishing’s HD Line Spooler is the best way to fill a reel with line. The heavy steel base sits securely to provide tension to the line. To fill large reels, the HD Line Spooler fits the largest bulk spools.

There were many days that we went out in below zero temperatures. The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks stocks the impounded body of water with hatchery-raised salmon every year and monitors their health and progress. Since the fish are unable to breed naturally in the lake, the hatchery must harvest some breeding-age fish every year and do the spawning work themselves. They do so by “milking” sperm and eggs manually from captured fish stunned and netted by FWP employees. Eggs are then fertilized at the hatchery near the reservoir.

DiLulo likes to bake or smoke his catch, but there are many ways to cook a fish. After more than six minutes, DiLulo emerged victorious, pulling the 8-pound salmon from the frigid waters of Fort Peck Reservoir, and with a gleaming grin held his prize up to admire. You’ll then need to complete this song and dance for each fish that you wish to catch. It might seem a little complicated at first, but you’ll get used to the mechanics very quickly.

When a bowfin bites you need to hit it hard and muscle it in, and if your gear isn’t up to task, rods will snap as they dart, jump, and thrash from hookset to landing. The global fishing equipments industry mainly concentrates in North America, Europe, Japan and China. The history of the Smiling Bill bucktail jig is rather convoluted. Research suggests it debuted in the 1950s in Florida and quickly became a staple farther north in striper country, particularly among anglers fishing from boats. As the story goes, bucktail jigs were not very popular in Montauk, New York, in the late 80s until Andrus showed up and dominated the fish below Montauk Light with his revamped Smiling Bill. The truth is out there, but the details are ultimately unimportant, because the bottom line is that several companies now produce this style of bucktail and they’ll catch any bass that swims.

The lightweight, low-profile design allows the line spooler to fit in a tackle bag so you can take a full-feature line spooler wherever you fish. Lehr’s reports shark anglers Adriano Castro, Chase Polley, Benji Diaz and Jack and Nick Sadler have been night fishing for sharks from area beaches with whopping results. Lemon and bull sharks have taken their stingray baits most often, with Adriano Castro’s eight foot tiger topping the trophy list. The guys use heavy shark tackle, with big game reels sometimes capable of holding 2,500 yards of line, as per Fish and Wildlife guidelines.
