Best bass fishing rods of 2022

When a pike hits a popper, its hard, fast, and comes out of nowhere. Most the time, slow-sink or intermediate-sink fly lines are what you need for pike, but pairing them with topwater flies doesn’t really work. Whatever 8-weight floating line you have should be fine, but I’ve come to really like Scientific Anglers Titan. It features a long, thick front taper designed to turn over bulky flies faster and with less false casting, which stops your arms from wearing out and helps you cover more water. Unless I’m bound for Northern Canada where 40-plus-inch pike are very common, I lean on an 8-weight fly rod and reel. Any 8-weight rod and reel you can afford will do, but you will want a dedicated floating line for topwater pursuits.

The thing that sets the Premier apart, at least for me, is the simple, straight Portuguese cork grip. The full length of the grip allows easy two-handed casting to keep your arms from wearing down. Most manufacturers are leaning to more tapered grips in their rods, which have their own benefits.

October caddis, mahoganies and BWOs have all been seen sporadically, and cloud cover will make dry fly fishing more consistent. Otherwise, streamer fishing on stormy days is a great option for getting chases from big fish. Those conditions have been quite common during the last few weeks contributing to a downturn in fishing activity in the area.

That injection-molded plastic construction subsequently made the lure much more affordable than many wooden lures of the era. In essence, the Bomber helped more people get into surfcasting, because they could grab these lures off any department store shelf. Furthermore, Bombers were extremely productive, which is why they’re still around today. To increase the odds that you’ll drive the hook home, work your flies with the rod low. Try to always manage your line so it’s as straight to the fly as possible without any curves or excess slack. When a pike makes a move, just keep stripping with that low rod angle until it comes tight.

In a more general report, he said lakers were good and big on the South Reef Tuesday in around 130 feet; some transient kings with attitude out deep, too; still some silver fish in the harbors, no browns yet. Limit of lake trout Tuesday out of Waukegan on Fishfood Charters. Bob Johnson with his best smallmouth bass of the year from the Kankakee River. I don’t think there is any change from previous years regarding fishing regs, as a reminder, we are closed to fishing until 12pm during duck season (10/29 – 12/27).

Not only are these glasses comfortable, but they also offer the broadest range of lens and frame combinations of any glasses of the models I’ve tested—making these the best polarized sunglasses overall. Jon Conklin, fishing guide, reports fair fishing for striped bass with brood minnows. Stripers are beginning to migrate upstream away from Beaver Dam.

The fiberglass has a slower, more forgiving flex to load up properly on the cast and retrieve, while the graphite delivers sensitivity where you need it. The composite construction creates a bulky midsection above the reel seat that may be distracting to some anglers. While she might look like a chunky monkey, the rod is still very light thanks to the graphite at the front of the blank. Southtown Sporting Goods in Fayetteville reports good bluegill fishing with worms or crickets.

Crappie are hit and miss on minnows or jigs around brush and brush piles. Try top-water lures, crank baits or spinner baits at various depths. Spinning rods are not just good for bass fishing, they’re lifesavers when the fishing gets tough. Most bass anglers may have a love affair with baitcasting rods and reels, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a tournament angler who doesn’t have at least one spinning rod ready on the deck.

You can purchase premium tapered leaders for throwing pike poppers, but I keep it simple. I’ll splice 2 feet of 30-pound monofilament to 2 feet of 20-pound monofilament with a Blood knot, and then I’ll add approximately 8 inches of Cortland’s Tie-Able steel leader to the end to prevent bite-offs. I find that a short, compact leader like this turns foam bugs over easier, helps me cast them more accurately, and provides a much surer hook set. Modern rods are made of fiberglass, graphite, or a combination of the two.
