The modern story of trout streams in the West is a familiar one. Water heats up in June, and relief rarely comes until late summer. Our luggage is spread in front of us on tarps, reflecting the luxury we hope pack animals afford. The two-burner stove, rollable table, marinated frozen elk steaks, and hammock feel more suitable for a backyard BBQ than a backcountry camping trip. Why not? Dehydrated meals, handleless toothbrushes, and Jetboils are for backpackers. Collecting such ownership data, it says, would allow the application of laws to combat money laundering, tax and financial crimes, thus creating ways to tackle the underlying fisheries-related crimes and abuses.
Plants produce oxygen during the day, when heat stresses trout, and soak it up at night, when trout need to recharge. As my husband, Josh, and our friend, fisheries biologist Nick Walrath, play gear roulette among the panniers, we quickly realize the extra 300 pounds of capacity only go so far. We make hard choices (elk steaks, snack bag, and solar shower stay; the stupidly large mosquito canopy goes), then decide we’ll also just carry our packs instead of strapping those to the llamas too. We’re at 7,300 feet, where water and air are cooler than in the lower-elevation town we came from. We have three girls between the ages of 5 and 8, two young dogs, plus a third who’s old enough that we’re hoping she can keep up. Striped bass are biting between Rocky Branch and Starkey parks on shad or brood minnows.
A number of years ago we’d worked for the same outfitter guiding fly fishers on the South Platte River. I told people that nobody gets a better drag-free drift whether fishing a dry fly or nymph than Angus, and nobody can teach that skill better than he can. Even if we buckle down and do everything possible to address climate change now, most scientists agree it won’t be enough. But that doesn’t mean fishing in the West is doomed. Hanging up our rods each summer in a fit of despair does anglers—and fish—no good. We won’t all be relegated to casting for carp, at least not within many of our lifetimes.
Brood minnows or shad are the best bait fished on the north half of the lake. Angus headed to river left to start us off and John hooked up a rainbow trout on his first cast. After that the off-color water didn’t seem quite as menacing. I fished the dry fly dropper rig for a while, but after John hooked up again I switched over to a streamer.
NWA fishing report
We managed to land several nice trout apiece during the morning and had a bunch of follows and “near-takes” before things slowed down. However, fishing gear is designed to catch animals and so is generally understood as the most environmentally damaging type of plastic pollution in research to date. We also estimate that between 1.7% and 4.6% of all land-based plastic waste travels into the sea. The author’s husband hooks into a trout in a stream well above 9,000 feet in Wyoming. Christine PetersonDave Budniakiewicz has been working and guiding on rivers in Colorado’s Eagle Valley for almost a decade.
The data we collected came directly from fishers themselves. They experience this issue firsthand and are best poised to inform our understanding of fishing gear losses. This lost fishing equipment, known as ghost gear, can cause heavy social, economic and environmental damage. Hundreds of thousands of animals are estimated to die each year from unintentional capture in fishing nets.
The Winds are known for remote stretches of wilderness, not heavily roaded forests. The family collection of rods and reels, all rigged for trout. Fish survived in some places and required constant restocking by state agencies in others. Warm-water species won’t outcompete all trout, not right away. Brown trout will likely fare best since they’ve evolved to tolerate warmer water. But native fish like cutthroat will suffer, Rhea says.
The more areas trout can use to expand, retreat, and hide, the more likely they are to survive a changing climate. That means tackling some of the thousands of culverts scattered around the West that make fish passage impossible. The Walraths spend much of their time working to remove those culverts.
